Siesta
A bloke, his wife, and a 2 year old. Covid. Whatever. Let's go to Spain!
The travel diary I started, stopped just before the ending, and finally finished years later. The best part of six months on the Andalusian coast through the strangest stretch of the pandemic. Arrival to homecoming, twenty-three Siestas.
New here? Start at Siesta 01: So here we are..., or read the whole thing back to front, it's finished either way.
- Siesta 01 So here we are... Well, what a first week. To set the scene, this is being written with a freshly poured glass of Rioja beside me outside in temperatures still over 20… 7 September 2020
- Siesta 02 Preparation is Key... So the plan to move to Spain for up to 6 months and live out lockdown in the sunshiine was on. Work seemed cool with it, first major box ticked. But… 8 September 2020
- Siesta 03 What a waste of time... The second car had to go. The precarious buy of a TT when my wife got her new job a year ago now needed to be sold. It was a fun car to drive, but… 9 September 2020
- Siesta 04 Let's get on with it... Ok, so the car had gone. Dog had gone. Just needed to plough through the work week and prep for the flight, early Sunday morning. A hire car had… 11 September 2020
- Siesta 05 Next time book Europcar like everyone else... The plane landed 20 minutes early, apparently with less flights currently, planes can go more directly. The mask wearing was impeccable adhered to… 12 September 2020
- Siesta 06 What iron bridge? Blimey. We've been here just over a week. Feels like a month already. I've been working for the first time today, actually felt quite normal. Time… 14 September 2020
- Siesta 07 My New Nemesis First night, I should have slept like a baby. It was a long day, the travel cot was not due to arrive until the next day. So my daughter was in with… 15 September 2020
- Siesta 08 A quick swim it is... The afternoon arrived. We headed to one of the many Chinese owned shops that seem to sell everything, there appears to be at least one in any… 16 September 2020
- Siesta 09 Truce agreed... Another work day done. Managed a walk down by the river, the neighbours have struck a deal to keep the dog on a long lead after 6pm. This was a test… 17 September 2020
- Siesta 10 Sod it. Let's go to the beach... Holiday week was in full swing. I'd suddenly realised one, we hadn't been to the beach yet and two, I'd failed to have a decent cafe con leche. This… 20 September 2020
- Siesta 11 Monday Monday... Well, today is another work day. But I tell you what, this has to have been one of the best Mondays, well, ever. Managed to start the day with a jog… 22 September 2020
- Siesta 12 Consistency is Key.... It was 4AM. I was already stirring from the heat. My wife was once again in the other room with the ceiling fan and a newly acquired fan from the… 23 September 2020
- Siesta 13 Pulling the plug... I think I'm enjoying this. I sit relaxed, my 2 year old has been asleep for over an hr, not even a stir. My wife relaxes in the next room, back… 23 September 2020
- Siesta 14 So here we are... (again) The decision to stick or twist or, indeed, fold were real. It came down to the wire. My wife had returned seemingly a lot better spirited than I… 26 September 2020
- Siesta 15 Simple, earthly, and bloody well tasty… So, we are still here. Enjoying the experience more than ever. I think I can safely say we have started to feel settled; a routine is starting to… 29 September 2020
- Siesta 16 Nice little Saturday... Timeline check. It’s the beginning of October and it’s been another day on the beach. The autumnal weather has not escaped us though, wind and rain… 3 October 2020
- Siesta 17 Mañana, mañana... So, the weekend was done, but whatever, Monday’s are bloody well great now. I do not formally start work until 10AM, just enough time for a stroll… 9 October 2020
- Siesta 18 A bloody good time had by all... Don’t worry. Still here. Feels like an age since the last post. The weekend just gone was a bit of a blur, where a bad cold has taken hold of the… 17 October 2020
- Siesta 19 Raining Dogs and Cats... There is rain forecast today and tomorrow too. Are you ready for it? Get everything inside. It’s going to be quite the downpour. This is not your… 28 October 2020
- Siesta 20 Basketball Diaries... Friday night. It’s quiet. Too bloody quiet. All I can hear are the waves softly crashing outside the apartment. I’m sat on the sofa with both child… 13 November 2020
- Siesta 21 I think this will do nicely... oh yeah, I was doing a blog! 2 January 2021
- Siesta 22 The rainy season (that never really rained) The December we never wrote. Christmas, Sierra Nevada snow, an empty Seville, and the best of it. 15 January 2021
- Siesta 23 The long way home We left because it was sensible. The drive north, the storm-bound ferry, and home to Bernard. 6 February 2021
